The Chinese Taoist Temple is truly one of Chico's treasures. The Temple's ornate design and extreme
attention to detail make it one of our most beautiful attractions.
The objects and altars seen in this Chinese Temple or Joss House come from Chico's "new Chinatown" which was in existence from 1890-1939. The Temple consists of a main altar enclosed by three elaborately carved, gold covered wooden arches, one behind the other, two secondary altars, a Wu Kung (a 5 piece ceremonial set of pewter), and many other original furnishings.
Our Chico Timeline, Chico: A Place in Time 1830-2000, includes
portraits of prominent Chico residents painted by local artist, Sal Casa, and
historic photographs and artifacts representing six eras of Chico's history.
A large 5x5 relief map of Northern California puts Chico and the surrounding area into its geographical context and planned enhancements include exhibits on Chico's Mechoopda Maidu Indians and aspects of North Valley agriculture.
